HIM – Screamworks: Love in Theory and Practice

HIM – Screamworks: Love in Theory and Practice

Rating: ★★★★☆

HIM the Finnish Love Metal rockers are back with their seventh album Screamworks: Love in Theory and Practice, Chapters 1–13. Over the last eight years or so HIM has quickly become one of my favorite bands of all times. Whether it’s Ville’s vocals, the truly outstanding guitar work, or the bands phenomenal use of keyboards and synthesizers.  HIM is one of the most original acts to hit the music scene in a very long time.

I remember the first time I heard HIM. I had just downloaded (illegally I might add)  CKY4. So as I’m rolling on the floor laughing at Bam Margera and his crew performing some of the funniest stunts I’d ever seen.  Out of nowhere this music video interrupts their idiotic antics.   First I hear this kick-ass melody with a chunky guitar, the drums, the keyboards, and then the voice hits me.   I was truly blown away.  I immediately fast forwarded to the end hoping their was a credit and a name. There it was HIM the name of the song RIGHT HERE IN MY ARMS.  With that my search began I bought every album I could find, and I have been a LOVE METAL fan every since.

Screamworks: Love In Theory And Practice is another strong release from HIM. This is possibly the bands most accessible album to date. “Heartkiller” is slated as the first single to be released off the album, but lets face it any of the songs would make a strong first release.  “In Venere Veritas” has a very radio friendly sound that should appeal to all Lovers of good hard rock. “Ode to Solitude” boasts some very edgy keyboard and synth work.  “Scared to Death” has that distinct metal sound that fans of the band just can’t get enough of.

Screamworks: Love In Theory And Practice compared to earlier releases from HIM may lean a bit to the lighter side of  LOVE METAL, and that may turn off a few fans of the band. I hope that the overall strength of the record and it’s diverse moods will keep the HIM army listening and wanting more.
