Maulermithel’s take on ‘Black Robot’:
BLACK ROBOT is the perfect example of why city boys should never try to pass themselves off as a Southern Rock band. Yogi Lonich , Jonathan Brightman, and Devon Glenn (all former members of the band BUCKCHERRY) are accompanied by vocalist, and Detroit native Huck Johns on this mish mosh of seventies, southern , and classic rock.
I’m not even sure what these guys were going for. The whole things sounds forced and unoriginal. I’ve seen on the web where the album is getting rave reviews, but I just don’t get it. I mean there’s people out there comparing it to Appetite for Destruction and The White Album! Come on people! Seriously? Some tracks sound a little like AC/DC, others sound like the BLACK CROWES. Some of it sounds like AEROSMITH. Are you seeing a pattern here? BLACK ROBOT without a doubt wears their influences on their sleeves, but unfortunately for them none of it lives up to the originals.
I really expected more when I heard who was in the band. I’m not sure if this is going to appeal to all you BUCKCHERRY fans. Compared to them BlACK ROBOT for me just falls flat.
Nuff Said…
Mommy_dani’s opinion about ‘Black Robot’:
Black Robot’s self titled album brought me back to a time when I’d steal my dad’s Led Zepplin, Black Sabbath, Aerosmith, etc… albums and listen to them on my record player, a time when I was sitting in my room listening to my favorite rock channel rockin’ out, and waiting for that ballad to play so I could imagine “he” was singing to me. This time capsule of a CD is nothing new, no twists or turns, these guys took 70′s, 80′s, 90′s rock and kept it the same, some new lyrics to give it a modern feel but kept the same simple message of the songs from their classic rock idols. They sing about what gets you hot, Motley Crue had their weakness “Girls, Girls, Girls” Black Robot knows that “Girls Kissing Girls” is what makes guys stupid today.
This CD has all the makings of a great rock album! It has songs about cars, love, money, being bad ass, dissatisfaction and don’t forget the ballads. This CD has 2, I know every guys gonna bitch about ‘em until he’s getting lucky in the backseat to one. (Does that really happen? Not sure but that’s the idea behind a ballad-right!?) Lead track “Baddass” has a promising guitar riff reminiscent of AC/DC, this energetic song makes you want more. Next comes a cover of a classic “Cocaine”, not one of my favorites on the CD it’s hard to cover something that was so right the first time around. My 1st fav on the CD would definitely be “Nervous Breakdown” it’s got a funky rock feel to it, a song that gets stuck in your head, a song that makes you want a Captain n Coke and a live show now close your eyes and sway. Second fav is a fun rock song about what every rock god wants “Money”!
Black Robot has been playing some intimate live shows in L.A. and I think that is probably the best way to “hear” them but we can’t all make it to L.A. so this debut CD out April 13th is a great second option. When you hear the music you’ll constantly think to yourself, “who is this, it sounds like a song I know but I can’t put my finger on it.” Every song has it’s influence from some of the great classics and everyone will walk away thinking they sound like someone else…I just hope they sound enough like Black Robot to get noticed!
