When I sat down to write this all I could think was what the hell am I going to say about Slayer that hasn’t already been said. I mean we all know that Slayer is one of the Big Four of Thrash Metal (Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Anthrax), and to be honest three of the four have gone through radical changes while Slayer remained Slayer. The band has managed to stay true to themselves and their fans by maintaining the core ingredients that attracted people, like myself to them during the height of their popularity in the 80′s and 90′s.
Fast forward to 2009 some 20 years since Slayer began terrorizing the world with their high octane thrash metal played at light speed lyrically dealing with serial murders and religious blasphemy. We see the release of ‘WORLD PAINTED BLOOD” the bands eleventh album. To say the album is fast paced would be an understatement it’s practically blistering. Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman once again demonstrate why they are the dynamic duo of Death Metal. Let’s not forget about the rhythm section Tom Araya bass playing is solid as ever, with vocals that demonstrate Araya’s usual strength , anger and passion. Dave Lombardo still drives the pace like a Semi truck out of control. “Unit 731″ has some of Lombardo’s best drumming ever.
After all the turmoil the band went through with revolving drummers, and Rick Rubin becoming more hands off. All four original members are together stronger than ever. Slayer is once again firing on all cylinders! The band has truly regained the energy that had made them one of the most dynamic Metal units working today.
