Horrorpops – Kiss Kiss Kill Kill

Nothing sounds like the Horrorpops

Another Throwback Thursday review: Horrorpops – Kiss Kiss Kill Kill (2008)

Rating: ★★★★½

“Kiss Kiss Kill Kill” is the third album from the Danish psychobilly trio Horrorpops. Stripped down to the original three members, lead singer and upright bassist Patricia Day leads the band through 12 dramatic tunes that are, as the cover states, “tales about love and murder.”

The Horrorpops manage to break away from the gothic protocols of their genre and tackle more emotional and caustic topics. Kim Nekroman’s infectious guitar riffs and Patricia Day’s one of a kind voice kick off the album with “Thelma & Louise” . The track sets the tone for the whole album by introducing the crime noir aspect that weaves through the album on tracks like “Kiss Kiss Kill Kill” and “Highway 55.” The bands stripped down sound is perfectly suited for “Boot2Boot” a deeply personal track about the destruction of an anarcho-punk squat by the Coppenhagen police in 2007.

It’s easy to see that the Horrorpops are looking to the future by broadening and evolving the bands already sonic offerings. Nothing sounds like the Horrorpops and that individuality should keep them at the top of the Punk Rock mountain.

About Jeff M.

Jeff M. grew up in southern Alabama where he was a minority in his community for his open beliefs and love of Hard Rock & Metal. In his twenties, Jeff left the confines of his hometown and toured the southern United States as a drummer in a rock band. It was at this time that he began to develop his passion for beer & boiled peanuts. A passion that, along with his love of music would help to shape into the man he is today. In the battle between "The Road" and the love of his woman, his woman prevailed. So he married his sweetheart, packed his hellfire red Ford Ranger, and made his way to the Arizona desert, where still resided today. Jeff, formerly Maulermithel, began writing reviews and interviews for Little Rat Bastard in the fall of 2009 and has become one our primary regular contributors.
