This will be the first* official Disney/Marvel crossover since Disney bought Marvel back in 2009. It looks pretty neat and I know my kids will be extremely excited about it. Although as neat as it looks like it will be is unlikely that it will be as epicly awesome as if they had done something with Marvel & Pixar.

We always enjoy finding a surprise in our own backyard, so for those of us in the Arizona office of Little Rat Bastard stumbling across The Technicolors was just the thirst quenching thing we needed to kick of a long hot summer.

The Phoenix foursome that make up The Technicolors need to be heard to truly be appreciated, and they’re making it easy for you with the release of their latest album, ‘Listener’. If you’ve been looking for some real music from real musicians to get a break form the all the crap that gets forced on us by corporate radio, this is it. The Technicolors deliver with an album loaded with vocal power, upbeat rhythms, and the staple of good rock music raw guitar awesomeness. ‘Listener’ is eleven tracks of music that will remind you of the classics while being wholly brand new and built for today.

The Technicolors have a raw garage rock style with touch of British invasion polish and often bear similarities The Charlatans in their Beggars Banquet years. Kicking ‘Listener’ off is “Again” which will immediately reenforces my interpretation of their sound with its peppy hook and melodic flow. It’s the second track, “Sweet Time” that really shows how this band can shine, it’s the kind of track I imagine blaring out of the car windows on a warm summer night while whipping down the road. The guitar riffs of “Sweet Time” almost challenge you to go fast, fight harder, and overall just keep on rockin’. “Alive Ever After” has the makings of a blockbuster film’s soundtrack leader in it’s tone, harmonies, and effortlessly entrapping vocals. Later in the album, “Hollywood” stands out with it’s pleasantly jarring attack and release riffs and rhythm. “Hollywood” is the kind of track that lets you know that these guys are not just a cookie cutter band of this or that, they’ve got what it takes to not only get your attention but hold it there until they are through with you.

On the softer side, “Fake A Smile” with it’s piano accompaniment and delicately driving beat show that The Technicolors are more than bold and brash. This gentler sound is much more clearly defined by the album’s title track, “Listener” and on “Noah,” it’s here that the band really slows things down displays not only their versatility but also some real writing chops.

‘Listener’ closes on a sublime cover of Chris Isaak’s 1990 hit “Wicked Game” and although it can be heard as a straight up cover of the song it feels like a love letter to the original with a vocal style reminiscent of Rufus Wainwright.

The Technicolors seem primed to go places fast and ‘Listener’ sounds like it’s just the vehicle to get them there. The Arizona desert may seem to many like a desolate place with nothing to offer but you couldn’t be more wrong, the desert rocks, and it does with a little help from The Technicolors.

“The tour that won’t die.”

In 1994 Kevin Lyman started Warped Tour. Eighteen years later it is the longest running annual tour in North America.

I had the great privilege once again this year to sample what this years line up had to offer.

With 90+ bands to listen too and countless vendors and non profits to browse and support, once again this years warped tour seemed to have a little something for everyone. In my opinion they might even offer up too much. It’s easy to find yourself at one stage unable to tear yourself away to go to another stage to see a band that you came for. An over abundance isn’t necessarily a bad thing though, I found that any bands that I planned on seeing and didn’t make it to their set times was the result of finding something I didn’t expect to be entertained or enlightened by.  Vans Warped Tour is great in this aspect. There is never a dull moment with this tour. There is always something to keep you entertained.

This year Vans Warped Tour moved to a new location here in Arizona. Camelback Ranch Stadium proved to be a perfect match for the tour. Whether it was watching larger bands playing on the main baseball field where there was not lack of shade thanks to the shaded bleacher seats. Thirst was one thing that was not plentiful thanks to Klean Kanteens‘ water filling stations and the countless water, shaved ice, and sports drink vendors.

As for the bands it seemed to be the perfect eclectic mix that Warped Tour has become known for over the past few years. Its this kind of thoughtful detail orientated planning that makes Warped Tour what it has become today and what will keep it coming around year after year.

It’s not everyday that you can check a concert calendar, pick a band with an upcoming show, throw them an email expressing your interest in photographing them live, have them write back almost immediately welcoming you and a plus one to said show, give a quick listen to their first album, fall in love with said album, go to their show and have your mind completely blown away, all while trying to maintain an incredibly long run on sentence.

Well my friends, this is the kind of day I had when I discovered The Technicolors.

Based here in Arizona The Technicolors are an incredible bunch of guys that seemed to have been designed to do one thing – Blow your mind with wonderfully delivered rock goodness.

Their new album “Listener” is out now and definitely deserves a….well….listen.

In the next few days it looks like the boys will be heading to northern Arizona for a few shows and will be returning to the valley to play The Roxy in Scottsdale on July 6th. With more tour dates expected in the near future stay tuned to LittleRatBastard.com for updates.

We will definitely be keeping our eyes on and our ears open to The Technicolors.

I think the term “Super Group” gets thrown around a lot these days, and it has been attached to Dark New Day for some reason. Yes the band has members from Sevendust, Stuck Mojo, and Evanescence but let’s be honest I don’t think the world at large will be remotely aware of or consider this a super gathering. That may be even more true after hearing the record. When I’m told that I’m listening to a super group I expect to be blown away, truthfully I was anything but. Unfortunately Dark New Day released a slick, well produced, formulaic radio rock album loaded with B-sides at best.

Normally I’d break down a few songs but as is the case with the majority of the Nu-Metal classification the music is arena built and so similar in sound it’s hard to distinguish one from another. Clint Lowery of Sevendust is probably the most recognizable name of all the band members, my question for Clint would be why have a side project that sounds so similar to his main band without the good tunes?

Dark New Day will no doubt grab recognition for the album and fans of the band and Nu-Metal will appreciate it for what it is, but I don’t see new fans waiting in line or rushing out to add this one to their respective libraries.

It seems like way too long since I photographed some live music. It was only a few weeks ago that I shot “Margot and the nuclear so and so’s” live at The Crescent Ballroom but in a few short hours I will be at it again.

This time I will have The Technicolors in my viewfinder waiting for the perfect moment to fire off some shots.

On June 27th The Technicolors will be having a CD release party at the ballroom and have generously agreed to my pleading to let me photograph.

If you are in the mood to rock I highly recommend joining me for the festivities. This will be a really fun show and should be packed wall to wall.

Doors open @ 8 and cover is a mere $10!!!

The Crescent Ballroom provides great sound in an intimate setting and I can not emphasize this enough – THIS SHOW IS GOING TO ROCK!!
