Glenn Danzig today announced the highly anticipated return of his BLACKEST OF THE BLACK tour.

Glenn Danzig today announced the highly anticipated return of his BLACKEST OF THE BLACK tour. In its latest reincarnation since 2008, the tour’s lineup will feature Danzig, legendary Bay Area hell-thrashers Possessed and Swedish black metal pioneers Marduk, who are making a rare & long awaited U.S. touring appearance. Toxic Holocaust and Withered will be rounding out the five band bill. The 19-city tour kicks off on October 25th in Albuquerque, NM.

In addition to Glenn, Danzig’s band for Blackest of the Black will consist of Tommy Victor (Prong, Ministry) on guitar, Steve Zing (Samhain) on bass and Bevan Davies (Danzig) on drums. Danzig is scheduled to perform at the free Red Bull Metallicross event at Pala Casino in Pala, CA on Oct. 23, on the eve of the Blackest of the Black kickoff.

“I’m excited about taking out both Possessed & Marduk as fans will get a chance to see these two bands who rarely tour the US,” said Glenn. It should also be noted that Danzig hasn’t played most of these markets in the past two years.

An exclusive internet presale will launch on Tuesday, September 7th at http://tixx1.artistarena.com/danzig/. Fans simply enter the user name: danzig and password: tickets. Sales to the general public start on Friday, September 10th.

Official Site: Blackest of the Black

The video for ON A WICKED NIGHT can be seen on AOL’s Main Music Page and saw its world premiere this week on AOL’s Noisecreep. Directed by Glenn Danzig himself, the video was shot at the infamous Bronson Canyon Bat Cave in Hollywood, CA where much of the original Batman television series was filmed.

Danzig’s BLACKEST OF THE BLACK was founded and masterminded by dark rock icon Glenn Danzig, as an avenue for darker and more extreme bands to reach their countless fans. The inaugural tour took place in 2003 followed by runs in 2005, 2006 and 2008 with Danzig headlining and dark/extreme metal luminaries such as Dimmu Borgir, Superjoint Ritual, Lacuna Coil, Opeth and Behemoth appearing on BLACKEST OF THE BLACK over the years.

This summer saw the release of Danzig’s first new studio album in over six years, Deth Red Sabaoth (Evilive/The End). It debuted at #36 on the Billboard Top 200, stayed in the CMJ Loud Rock top 3 for 5 weeks (holding the #1 spot for 3 weeks) and received overwhelmingly positive laudations by the press:

“It’s wonderful to hear Danzig & Co. do that voodoo they do so well … the new record delivers the thrills and chills that fans would hope for, and that Danzig, at his best, is so good at serving up.” – Revolver (****)

“Danzig makes a case for the existence of classic, bluesy metal in 2010.” – CMJ

The Charlatans (UK) have put together a solid album, possibly one of their best, in 'Who We Touch'

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

The thing that I have always loved about The Charlatans (UK) is the other-timely sound they have. As if they were a band made up of artists plucked from different time periods in rock history. They craft a sound all their own while never alienating their audience with the kind of way out experimentation that usually doesn’t pay off. All of this is still true of the band’s approach to writing & recording music on their eleventh album, ‘Who We Touch’.

Whether you call them The Charlatans or The Charlatans UK chances are you have heard them, or had a friend who was into them. Despite their strength in the UK the band has always lived just on the fringe here in the US, scoring successful singles on the college/alternative charts and touring with some pretty big names, but never really become a household name. Twenty-odd years into their careers the band seems to have come to terms with where they stand on each shore and just concentrate on making great music and building on the fan base they have already.

‘Who We Touch’ is another great album from The Charlatans, they have put together the type of album that is more about the music than the big single. It’s a great listen all the way through, a real chill out with some headphones and lose yourself kinda record. The album stars off slightly upbeat with a classic Charlatans sounding, “Love Is Ending”. This is the track that will hook you in and drag you down into the swampy sonic dream these Brits have become known for creating. “My Foolish Pride” is like a 60′s British Invasion B-Side, the kind that used to surpass the A-Side a few weeks in. The band tears it down a little bit with “Your Pure Soul” just to build it back up with harmonies and a catchy melody. The album eventually drifts slowly into an almost psychedelic down-tempo jam full of melodrama and of course “Sincerity”.

The Charlatans (UK) have put together a solid album, possibly one of their best, in ‘Who We Touch’. If you have ever wondered about The Charlatans now’s as good a time as any to give them a shot, you’ll finally get to know what you’ve been missing. If you’ve been waiting for the next release, wait no more, click the links below and get it now.

Members of Bang Bang Eche were fortunate to make it through the 7.1 earthquake that hit their hometown of Christchurch

The New Zealand band Bang Bang Eche was fortunate to make it through the 7.1 earthquake that hit its hometown of Christchurch Saturday, 4 September. Zach Doney (vocals) and James Sullivan (drums) were both asleep at home when the massive quake struck the region. Bassist T’Nealle Worsley and guitar player Charlie Ryder were overseas at the time, having remained in Europe after Bang Bang Eche’s recent three-month-long tour playing music festivals across the continent.

James, who lives in Central City in the middle of the devastation, has been unable to maintain regular contact with the outside world. Zach says, “Most of the buildings that have come down are businesses. If you drive down the street in any direction pretty soon you start seeing yellow Xs and ‘NO’ sprayed onto the doors of at-risk buildings and then you turn the corner and the two stories of the TV place and a restaurant are now one story and it’s all spilled out onto the road.”

Even in the rumble, some residents are able to maintain a sense of humor. Where one house used to stand is now a sign that reads, “Tours: $1 for 5 minutes.”

Being from the second-largest city in New Zealand comes with as much pride as it does small-town animosity. Zach says, “They built Christchurch like it was an English city with bricks and chimneys and brick chimneys and now those chimneys are lying about in the street and everyone is going to get new brick pathways for their new tiered gardens.”

But until then, he continues, “A builder told my flatmates not to sleep in their room because the chimney next door looks like a late-game Jenga puzzle and it’s going to come down through their window.”

Bang Bang Eche have two releases, Bang! Bang! Eche! in 2008 and Sonic Death Cuntttt in 2009. Both were lauded by tastemakers across the globe including NME, triple j, KEXP and many others. Presuming there is still a studio in which the band can record, Bang Bang Eche will commence work on a full-length album as soon as the rest of the band is able to return to Christchurch.

“AM has made one of the great pop albums of the year. Crammed with clever hooks, gorgeous melodies and an atmosphere of chiming Sixties melodrama it recalls spaghetti westerns and Brian Wilson in just about equal measure. It’s almost fruitless to pick out individual tracks but “ITs Been So Long” , “Darker Days” and “Leavenworth” will all melt your soul. An Album to fall in love with.”

AM’s album, Future Sons & Daughters (FILTER U.S. Recordings), is a collage of musical styles that recalls pieces of Brazilian tropicalia, British Invasion and ’60s psychedelia. His eclectic musical stylings have undoubtably been inspired by an array of artists. With this in mind, AM has created a very special playlist highlighting influential artists and songs which helped inspire the album.
Honestly, I was looking forward to reviewing this album and all I got was a headache

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars

What I first like to do when I get a new album, is listen to it all the way through, without skipping songs. Just so I can get the full feel and effect of the songs blending from one into another.

Funny side note, the first time I listened to Interpol was at the suggestion of a former boss of mine. He played me the song “The Heinrich Maneuver” which I instantly feel in love with.

With “The Heinrich Maneuver” being one of the only songs by Interpol that I currently have on my iPod- I am keeping that in mind as a reference while reviewing there new self titled album.

The album opens with a song called “Success” which for all intents and purposes is a great start to the record. It’s upbeat while being strangely mellow at the same time. It has the breezy laid-back rock feel that this band has seemed to posses in the past. The only thing it left me wanting was some sort of climax. The song brings you along just waiting at the brink for it to explode into something more, and it never quite brings you there.

The next song is “Memory Serves” which starts out with this guitar riff that sounds straight out of a metal/thrash band. It then turns into this harmonic and dream like guitar part mixed with hypnotizing monotone vocal arrangement. In spite of the lack of originality with the vocal part on this song, it quickly turned into one of my favorites on the album.

Next we come into “Summer Well” the opening rhythmic section had me intrigued, that this song might be a departure from the previous 2 having the same type of synth-guitar base. However, it quickly proved me wrong and fell back into the same type of weird guitar/keyboard melody that is hanging very closely on a line of being completely off key and chaotic.

After the first three songs, my head is starting too hurt. As is the problem with most bands these days, there entire albums seem to revolve around the same 3 or 4 guitar chords, and all the songs blend into each other until you really cannot tell one apart from the other, because there are really no distinguishing features. It all is just becoming white noise.

The next song “Lights” really sounds just like the song “Success” and at this point I am starting to really tire of the monotone vocal arrangements’. Perhaps more thought should have gone into an interesting vocal line with some good harmonies and not relying on the instruments to carry the songs along.

The next song “Barricade” which is the lead single off this album, is a slightly different departure from the previous 4 songs, where there is actually more to the vocal line then 2 notes. The guitars however and very grating and if I wasn’t reviewing this album, I would have shut this off already. This will definitely not be one of those albums that you could turn on and listen to from beginning to end.

The next song “Always Malaise (The Man I Am)” is playing with minor and dissonant chord progressions. While it shows that there is some musicality and someone has the ability to play around with clashing tones, it does not bring forth anything remotely worth listening too. It makes me tire of trying to see if the chords are ever going to resolve, when they are never going to and just ultimately makes me want to tune the song out. I don’t want to have to work at listening to my music, and this album is not one for easy listening.

I was going to continue to review this album song by song, but the next 4 songs sound just like the first five that I have already reviewed and I am not going to bore you with the same descriptions.

Honestly, I was looking forward to reviewing this album, thinking that I was really going to enjoy it, and all I got was a headache. I feel like these guys have the potential to put forth something great that bends the lines of normal alternative rock band. This album, however, misses the mark completely. I think they were trying so hard to sound different, that they went overboard and made an album where every song sounds the same, and makes me want to rip my ears off by the fourth track.

If you are looking for an easy listening album, or one you can put on and let it play through, this is not the album for you. There maybe one or two good songs that you could add to your collection or make into a play list, but I wouldn’t suggest anymore then that.

If we were rating this on a scale from 1-4 I would only be able to give it 1 star. Better luck next time.

Lucy's New Album, 'Life In Letters' due out 9/28!

Emerging artist Lucy Schwartz now has a featured profile page on Itunes PING, it’s new highly anticipated new social media website. On day three after Ping’s launch, Lucy is in the company of 19 other artists and music industry veterans, including megastars Lady Gaga, Coldplay, Taylor Swift and U2. Find her profile at http://bit.ly/lucyping.

Building on the momentum of a critically embraced EP and appearances on the Tonight Show and the Lilith Tour, Lucy Schwartz will release LIFE IN LETTERS on September 28. Life in Letters establishes Schwartz as a major talent, big and bright and bursting with energy. LA Weekly called her arrangements “smart; she brings a spectacular whimsy to everything she does, adding ukulele or a capella harmonies where you’d least expect them, cranking up every emotion into surround sound. There’s so much joie de vivre in her music, she’s written no less than two songs – “Graveyard” and “Shadow Man” – about what it takes to feel truly alive.”

In addition to performing on Lilith, Schwartz has been playing numerous dates in NYC, L.A., has been asked to open for the Weepies in October and will celebrate the release of her album at Bardot, in Hollywood, CA, on September 27. (See dates below.)

Although the 20 year-old face of Lucy Schwartz may be new to some, many already know her voice. Rich and dreamy and all lit up in Technicolor, it’s graced movie theaters and TV sets across the country. “Darling I Do,” is one example: Lucy created the love theme to Shrek Forever After and performed the song with her co-writer Landon Pigg on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. The L.A.-based singer-songwriter has also written for numerous films including Mother & Child, Post Grad, Adam, and the The Women and her songs have been featured in more than a dozen hit television shows. Schwartz also sang the hilariously campy jingles “Mister F” and “For British Eyes Only” on Arrested Development.

The first single from the album is “Graveyard”. While conceiving the video, Lucy, who has studied dance and movement, happened to be watching an episode of the show So You Think You Can Dance, marveling at the work of choreographer Sonya Tayeh. The next day she wrote Tayeh, a complete stranger, and asked her to work on “Graveyard”. She accepted, and now Schwartz uses her moves in the clip, twirling and jumping through a smoke-machine haze. “I like to have everything just the way I’d imagined it, from the artwork to the visuals to the songs,” says Schwartz.

Lucy Schwartz is an emerging artist who uses her imagination to deeply engage with the world. And Life in Letters challenges that world to engage with her the same way. True, you already knew that voice. But thanks to Life in Letters, you’ll now remember her name.

Fill your drinking horn and join Heidevolk by the fire for tales of glory and Vikings.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

There are few types of music that inspire instantaneous pride like Viking metal. Guitar riffs that have an overtly positive tone, galloping percussion and big powerful vocals are earmarks of a solid Viking metal band. Heidevolk take those earmarks and turn them up to 11 on their latest full-length Uit Oude Grond (From Old Soil).

There’s a long running misconception that Viking metal needs to sound like Unleashed or Amon Amarth to embody the “Viking” portion of the moniker—growled vocals and incredibly heavy. Heidevolk take a refreshing approach to the sub-genre by incorporating clean, baritone vocals with lyrics sung in the band’s native Dutch. Joris Boghtdrincker’s voice is reminiscent of Rammstein’s Till Lindemenn’s deep, pseudo-melodious bellow. Heidevolk does remain heavy enough, musically, to keep the traditionalists happy.

It is a bleedin’ shame that I’m unable to speak (understand) Dutch as there is an overwhelming urge to sing along when listening to Uit Oude Grond – even if it’s your first time hearing it. The propulsive musicianship does make for some spectacular driving music, specifically on the tracks “Vlammenzee” (“Sea of Flames”) and album opener “Nehalennia.”

Uit Oude Grond isn’t all pounding metal as the band lets up and allows some of their folk roots to shine through, specifically on “Een Geldersch Lied” (“A Gueldrian Song”) and “Alvermans Wraak” (“Revenge of the Alverman”). So, for fans of Manegarm, Finntroll, Amon Amarth or Svartsot fill your drinking horn and prepare to throwdown on some truly epic folk/Viking metal. You will know what it means to be a Viking, sans all the desecrating of women and pillaging stuff.

Powerful yet delicate her voice far betrays her small stature, and easily capture the ear of anyone nearby

Two Saturdays ago I was bored, the wife was working, the kids were staying at the in-laws, & I left pretty much all my friends back east when we decided to move out to the desert a few years ago. So I hit up AZCentral.com and looked for some live local music to take in. Surprisingly, there wasn’t a lot going on in the Valley of the Sun this particular Saturday night, but I did happen upon one act that piqued my interest. Sarah Vanell was playing the Desert Ridge Marketplace at the Fountain, and judging from the songs she featured on her website, she was worth taking the drive out to see.

Sarah has been playing here in the valley for about eight years. Usually, she plays with a backing band made up of close friends & her husband Tyce Thielson, but tonight was a solo affair. Although the band wasn’t playing with her this evening, it seemed like most of the members were there to support her. The setup was pretty simple, just a riser with her keyboard and guitar, but I was about to find out that was all she needs to put on a great show. Sarah Vanell is a petite little thing, but she has a strong beautiful voice. Powerful yet delicate her voice far betrays her small stature, and easily capture the ear of anyone nearby.

Her set was about two hours long and consisted of a wonderful selection of cover songs as well as nice variety of her own music. Much of Sarah’s original music that she played this night was brand new material that she planned on recording the next day for an upcoming album. In particular, she played “Other Side of Green” which can be heard on the front page of her website, and another song that I loved but sadly can not remember the title of (perhaps if she reads this she might recall which one I had told her I enjoyed so much and include it in the comments). Their were at least four songs that she mentioned were new and going to be on the soon to be recorded album, and many from her previous releases.

Besides Sarah’s great original music she also played from a huge catalog of songs that she travels with. One young boy standing next to me marveled out loud about just how many songs she must have in all those binders, “and she can play them all?!” Sarah’s rendition of the Fleetwood Mac/Stevie Nicks song Dreams really gave a showcase for her range and vocal control without succumbing the pitfall of not actually being Stevie Nicks. While Sarah has a very signature sound to her own work she has a real understanding of what an audience expects when hearing you play one of their old favorites. That’s not to say that she doesn’t add a little of her own panache, just that the songs are performed beautifully and are recognizably to a very satisfied audience.

Overall Sarah Vanell is a very talented singer and equally talented songwriter, and from what I could tell in the few moments I had to talk to her a sweet & wonderful person. I would love to have an opportunity to see her perform again with the whole band, and will try to make sure I do so. I am anxious to hear the new album that she is working on right now. In the meantime, I will be checking out the album she gave me to listen to, ‘Emotional Discharge’ and posting a review soon.
